While I won’t claim to know all of the inner workings of what life is like for a Pokémon inside of a Poké ball, I do know this… it’s a place where there is both safety from the battle as well as a position of stagnation. Pokémon do not gain experience from a position of passive presence in a Poké ball… the rewards for participation are limited to those who leave the cozy confines of the ball and choose to actively enter the fray. Sure, there is a risk associated with the rewards for engaging in the challenges they will face outside of their safe space, but growth is only achieved for those who decide to join the fight.
As followers of Christ, it can be very easy for us to retreat behind the safe walls of our homes and places of worship and seek spiritual growth in a more comfortable place… and while there is a time for seeking a place of rest and refuge from the battles we are fighting in life, we cannot serve the Lord in a vacuum. Going out into the world to reach others for Christ and engaging in battle with the spiritual forces of darkness on this planet isn’t just a recommendation, it’s a command… and it is only through these experiences that we increase in our own spiritual growth. Rather than wonder why God is allowing something to happen to us, let’s seek to understand what He is trying to teach us through our current struggle. It’s not a punishment… it’s a chance for us to level up.
My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. James 1:2-4
Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you; but rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christ’s sufferings, that when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy. 1 Peter 4:12-13
