Pokémon vs. Pocket Monsters: Moving Past our Old Names

Before going by their universally known and beloved name of “Pokémon”, this franchise began life under the name “Pocket Monsters”… and I think we can all agree that shortening the name was the right call. While the name “pocket monsters” is technically accurate and is a fair description of the characters that the series is based on, it is highly unlikely the series would have ever reached the cultural impact it has had under that title. And let’s be honest… the theme song wouldn’t be the same without the iconic ending, “Gotta catch ‘em all, Pokémon!”  Names matter, and while these little creatures might have identified as “pocket monsters” at one point in their existence they’re all “Pokémon” to us now.

All of us were known by different “names” before our new birth in Christ… narcissist, cheater, liar, addict, thief, and more. But once we have been washed clean by the Lord we are clothed in His righteousness…. we are an entirely new creation, and all of those old names and titles that we once carried no longer represent who we are anymore. Sure, we will still run into people who remember us as the “pocket monsters” that we once were, and our enemy will whisper our past in our ears to convince us to disqualify ourselves from service. But Christ didn’t die for our sins just so we can continue to live under our old names or wear our old chains… who the Son sets free is free indeed.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. 2 Corinthians 5:17

You shall no longer be termed Forsaken, nor shall your land any more be termed Desolate; but you shall be called Hephzibah, and your land Beulah; for the Lord delights in you. Isaiah 62:4

Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed. John 8:36
