“Megatron has Fallen!” – The Problem with Celebrating when our Enemies Stumble

Starscream and Megatron have always had a complicated relationship, but it is made even more difficult by Starscream’s habit of shouting “Megatron has fallen” and immediately assuming control of the Decepticons as soon as Megatron so much as stubs his toe on a piece of furniture. Perhaps that’s a small exaggeration, but make no mistake about it… Starscream is ready to pounce and celebrate his rival’s misfortune the moment something goes wrong. Ironically, when Megatron did finally fall in battle, Starscream’s reign was incredibly short-lived, as Megatron returned with a vengeance as Galvatron and made Starscream pay for his treachery… and in the end they both lost. With allies like these, who needs enemies?

As followers of Christ, we are not only expressly forbidden to celebrate the downfall of others but we are actually commanded to do the opposite… we are guided to love our enemies, pray for those who persecute us, and show kindness even to those who are seeking to do us harm. We don’t celebrate the failures of anyone, even if they have been acting in an adversarial manner to us. Our mission is not to defeat the lost souls around us, but to reach them with the love of Christ and save them. As Christ was being crucified for the sins of mankind, He did not seek punishment for those doing this to Him. He prayed for their forgiveness. Let’s walk in His footsteps and do the same.

Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. Therefore if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head. Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. Romans 12:14, 19-21

You have heard that it was said, “You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.” But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. Matthew 5:43-45
