There are few rivalries that are as intensely personal as the war between Optimus Prime and Megatron, two former friends turned adversaries engaged in a “winner takes all” battle with the future of Cybertron hanging in the balance. When Optimus Prime tells Megatron, “One shall stand, one shall fall” he means it… there is simply no room for negotiation or compromise between the Autobots and Decepticons, because each side is completely opposed to the other’s ideology and goals at a fundamental level. Megatron will never stop until he has fully ended the Autobots, and that means Optimus can show him no quarter in their conflict. There is no middle ground, and there will only be one victor when the dust settles.
The battle that rages within us between our flesh and spirit is also a “one shall stand, one shall fall” situation… making room for compromises in this conflict is a self-sabotaging decision that will only result in our defeat. We all have unique internal impulses that cause us to lean towards unhealthy choices for our spirit, and if we create any space for those thoughts to take root in our minds they will soon become actions, and eventually they will become our habits. We are at war with our flesh in a conflict we will have to fight until our final day, so let’s submit every thought and desire that passes through our mind to Christ and deny our enemy any rent-free space in our minds today.
For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ. 2 Corinthians 10:3-5
I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Galatians 5:16-17, 24-25
But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts. Romans 13:14
