The Transformation of Hot Rod to Rodimus Prime: Saving the Best for Last

If I’m being honest, Hot Rod wasn’t an Autobot that I cared for overly much when he was first introduced to the team. He was brash, arrogant, cocky… he certainly wasn’t one of my favorites. That’s what made his selection as the recipient of the “Matrix of Leadership” and the Autobot chosen for the honor of carrying on the legacy of Optimus Prime so surprising. He wasn’t the first choice… that responsibility went to Ultra Magnus, but it was not his destiny to become the next “Prime”. Despite his initial off-putting manner, Hot Rod was chosen because of the unseen potential he contained inside… and when it came time to defeat the unstoppable Unicron, “Rodimus Prime” was the Autobot that the situation called for.

As much as I hate to admit it, I probably have a lot more in common with Hot Rod than some of the more heroic and unselfish Autobots. I started out in the wrong direction in life, and I often had the wrong motives even when I was doing the right thing. But just as Jesus showed during the water-into-wine miracle in Cana as well as the emergence of the Apostle Paul as an unexpected ally for the Christian church, the Lord often saves His very best for last. Hot Rod, Paul, and I all have something in common… we each started out quite unworthy of the destiny we were meant to fulfill. And as Rodimus Primed proved, it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish that matters the most.

“A host always serves the best wine first,” he said. “Then, when everyone has had a lot to drink, he brings out the less expensive wine. But you have kept the best until now!” John 2:10

After that He was seen by James, then by all the apostles. Then last of all He was seen by me also, as by one born out of due time. For I am the least of the apostles, who am not worthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me was not in vain; but I labored more abundantly than they all, yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me. 1 Corinthians 15:7-10
