While the original animated Transformers movie was primarily traumatizing for the fall of Optimus Prime, there was another moment that scarred many of us as well… Galvatron’s destruction of Starscream. While I think we can all agree that after all his years of plotting and conniving he definitely had it coming, it was HOW it was done that was so hard to watch. After coveting the position of leadership for the Decepticons for so long, Starscream FINALLY achieved everything he had ever wanted… the crown, the prestige, the power, and the authority he craved. But his coronation day would turn out to be his last… his “crowning” achievement in life was a moment he would not get to enjoy for long. His lifelong pursuit ended in the bitter irony of a crushed crown from a foe he thought was vanquished… a tragic end to a life spent chasing treasure he couldn’t keep.
We all have dreams we are chasing in life, but any pursuit that is not built on the foundation of our love for the Lord and growing his kingdom will last about as long as Starscream’s tenure on the throne. With the limited time we have on this planet, what crowns are we choosing to chase and what treasure are we seeking? Will it last, or will all we worked for amount to a broken crown when the final chapter of our book is closed? Let’s invest our lives into pursuing what glorifies Christ today… that’s the only treasure that lasts.
And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry.” But God said to him, “Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?” So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God. Luke 12:19-21
Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matthew 6:19-21
For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, each one’s work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one’s work, of what sort it is. If anyone’s work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward. 1 Corinthians 3:11-14
