Barricade’s entrance into the first live-action Transformers movie initially tricked Sam into thinking he was an ally. In the middle of a very confusing circumstance, Barricade’s police car exterior resembled someone trustworthy and helpful. But when you are dealing with a Decepticon, looks can be very deceiving. His outward appearance might have reflected that he was here to help, but instead of the familiar vow “To Protect and Serve”, the motto “To Punish and Enslave” was emblazoned across his paint job… a detail that was unfortunately missed by Sam in his panicked state. Barricade revealed his true motivations once Sam’s guard was down… he was nothing more than a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

In our most fragile state, it is easy for us to ignore the “red flags” that would have been obvious to us in a more calm condition. And if we aren’t careful, we can mistakingly place our trust in the wrong people, following the siren call of a false teacher who promises to help us find peace but only offers more pain. The more disorienting that life becomes for us, the more critical it is that we press in closer to the Lord for discernment and wisdom to see through the facade. This world is filled with blind guides and ministers of darkness concealed as angels of light… let’s test everything we read and hear against the eternal authority of Scripture to protect against their deception.

I know that false teachers, like vicious wolves, will come in among you after I leave, not sparing the flock. Even some men from your own group will rise up and distort the truth in order to draw a following. Acts 20:29-30

For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works. 2 Corinthians 11:13-15
