Ironhide – Iron Sharpening Iron

While Optimus Prime was a fearless leader both on and off the battlefield, he still needed his weapons specialist Ironhide to not only cover his literal back, but his figurative one, too. Ironhide could be depended on to not only defend his friend with his life in battle, but also to provide additional options and a second opinion on tactics before the fighting began. While Megatron surrounded himself with an echo chamber of sycophants to validate his decisions, Optimus knew that a true friend can be counted on to not only be there when you need them, but to tell you the uncomfortable truth when you have to hear it.

Most of the worst mistakes I have made in life would have been avoided if I had simply taken counsel and listened to the advice of godly friends who were willing to share the inconvenient truths of God’s words, even if it wasn’t what I wanted to hear. True friends should aspire to more than simply making their friends feel better about their poor decisions… they should act as iron sharpening iron in each other’s lives, lovingly supporting each other’s growth in Christ and encouraging them to become the best version of themselves. Christ demonstrated the greatest love of all by not only laying down His life for each of us, but by sharing the words that offer eternal life to us as well… and He told us to do the same.

As iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend. Proverbs 27:17

This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends. John 15:12-13
