One of my favorite scenes in the “Dark Knight” movie is when Bruce Wayne asks for Alfred’s advice when dealing with the Joker’s horrific actions. And when he asks, “What would you have me do?”, Alfred simply replies, “Endure”. In that moment, it was not Batman’s strength or Bruce’s technological advantages or money that would win the day… it was his ability to endure what others couldn’t or wouldn’t that made him the hero Gotham truly needed. Endurance was the most important “superpower” he possessed at that time… and while most of us don’t typically enjoy it, the truth is the key to finding joy through our trials in life is through endurance as well.
Most of us are probably familiar with the verse in James that tells us to “consider it all joy when we encounter various trials”, but most Bible versions translate the next phrase “that the testing of our faith produces patience” when the compound Greek word used here would be more accurately translated to “abide under” or “endure”, conjuring up an image of holding steady while holding a weight on our shoulders. It is not a simple stoic resignation or passively waiting, but a confident demonstration of our faith while we wait for what comes next. Let’s demonstrate joyful and patient endurance today, no matter how difficult our situation is. If the advice was good enough for Batman, then it’s good enough for us, too. 🙂Happy Batman Day!
Consider it all joy, my brothers and sisters, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. James 1:2-4 For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God, you may receive what was promised. Hebrews 10:36
We count those blessed who endured. You have heard of the endurance of Job and have seen the outcome of the Lord’s dealings, that the Lord is full of compassion and is merciful. James 5:11
