It isn’t hyperbole to say that the death of Optimus Prime in the Transformers movie was one of the most significant events of my adolescent life… until that moment, I had never really processed the concept of death or someone being “gone”, whether real or fictional. But the tragic last stand of Optimus Prime was also an incredibly heroic demonstration of what it truly looked like to “finish the fight” and pass the baton to the next generation… and while I didn’t truly comprehend the significance of watching Ultra Magnus inherit the Matrix of Leadership, I understood through my tears that this is what a life well lived and the final passing of the torch is supposed to look like.

The final writings of the Apostle Paul brings tears to my eyes each time I read them for much the same reason… as Paul shares that he has “fought the good fight and finished the race”, I can picture him in that jail cell handing the baton to not only Timothy, but all who would follow in his footsteps and carry on his mission. Each of us have been handed this privilege, and as long as we have breath in our lungs we must seek to recruit, grow,  and inspire others who will carry this flame into the challenges of tomorrow. Let’s live our lives in a way that not only makes a difference in today’s battles, but leaves a legacy worthy of those who “ran the race” and paved the way for us to follow.

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing. 2 Timothy 4:7-8

You therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. 2 Timothy 2:1-2
