In the first live-action Transformers movie, Sam Witwicky serves as the “Everyman” point-of-view in the conflict between the Autobots and the Deceptions… and Sam’s initial response to the realization that his brand new car is actually a transforming sentient robot is a pretty “human” reaction. Sam didn’t understand Bumblebee’s attempts at communication or comprehend his mission, so he ran away from him. Ironically, Sam was running away from the one trying to save him and towards the Decepticon seeking to enslave him. Bumblebee’s attempts to protect Sam were originally misunderstood, but once Sam saw them as the actions of someone steering him away from danger and towards salvation, they became best friends willing to sacrifice all for the other.
I must confess that I have been a “prodigal” at heart for much of my life, pushing back against the “restrictions” of the Lord’s protective and loving guidance and into the very arms of the pursuits that were designed to destroy me. For many of us, our inability to see and understand God’s love for what it truly is can cause a similar response, but in His infinite grace He continues to pursue us and use every possible method of communication to show us His true intentions. Let’s look back and recognize all the times He’s shown up to save us from our own mistakes and respond to His love with a grateful heart today.
And he arose and came to his father. But when he was still a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him. Luke 15:20
For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:6-8
We love Him because He first loved us. 1 John 4:19
