Magneto is one of the most complicated and nuanced villains in Marvel’s entire cast of comic characters. The horrific pain and trauma he endured fractured his psyche and transformed him into a defender of his mutant brotherhood at any cost, which frequently puts him at odds with his life-long “frenemy” Professor X who sees their powers as a gift to help humanity, not rule over them. Magneto’s pain combined with his power resulted in a superiority complex that made it impossible for him to care about those who were different than him, and his unresolved issues with his past created a mutant with the power to save the world but lacked the empathy to help them.
In this broken world we live in, new battle lines are drawn almost daily as our spiritual enemies seek to divide humanity across every possible point of contention… but we are called to rise above all the hate-filled rhetoric and speak love, grace, and mercy even in the darkest of times. Christ gave us the ultimate example, as He showed love and forgiveness to the very people showering Him with insults as they cruelly executed Him on the cross. Let’s demonstrate compassion and pray for those who persecute us, refusing to allow the actions of others to control our responses. After all, it was his unconditional love and mercy for our unworthy souls that saved us in the first place.
If your enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he is thirsty, give him water to drink; for so you will heap coals of fire on his head, and the Lord will reward you. Proverbs 25:21-22
Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men. Romans 12:14, 17-18
Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.” Luke 23:34a
