Breaking the “Pattern”: Contending With Temptations and Breaking Generational Curses

At the center of Rumi’s personal struggles were the “patterns” that she wore on her body… the telltale signs that marked her as a hybrid being, a soul split between the Hunter she was born to be and the dark side of her that represented the very evil that she had dedicated her entire life to destroy. Poor Rumi didn’t do anything wrong to deserve these marks… the patterns that kept her isolated and brought her shame were simply a condition that she was born with. But pretending they didn’t exist or trying to cover them up didn’t solve her problem… she needed to reach a point where she reconciled her past with her present so she could finally move forward into the future.

As humans we are all born with a “sin nature”, and on top of that many of us also contend with “generational curses”… a pattern of negative behaviors passed down through our family trees. But like Rumi, there is hope for all who struggle with addictions, temptations, or broken places without success. While we can’t overcome these patterns of secret sinful behavior and private struggles through our own efforts, by submitting each of these areas to Christ He can break each and every one of these chains with finality. Let’s stop fighting a losing battle and give Him access to the parts of ourselves we try to keep hidden. He already knows, and He wants to set us free.

I find then a law, that evil is present with me, the one who wills to do good. For I delight in the law of God according to the inward man. But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? I thank God—through Jesus Christ our Lord! Romans 7:21-25a

There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. Romans 8:1-2
