Some of my favorite gaming protagonists would not have won the “most likely to save the world” award in high school… from humble plumbers like Mario and Luigi to the pink puffball with the voracious appetite named Kirby, the likelihood of these characters having a measurable impact on their world wasn’t very high. But outward appearances can be deceiving… these unlikely heroes were chosen specifically because their unassuming appearances made them perfect heroes for their missions. They may not look like traditional lead characters, but I learned not to underestimate them… they are designed to win.
As followers of Christ, we shouldn’t expect that everyone will recognize or be supportive of the gifts He has given us or the calling He placed in our hearts… while David was nothing more than a simple shepherd boy in the eyes of his family, God saw a man after His own heart and the future king. Jesus Himself was unrecognized as the Savior by His brothers and hometown, and rejected by most of those He came to save… so if our calling is poorly received by those we love the most, we are in pretty good company. Let’s not allow the limited way that others view us to question His call on our lives… our Father who sees beyond the surface designed, equipped, and chose us for this exact time and purpose.
For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart. 1 Samuel 16:7b
He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name. John 1:10-13
