Unwrapping the plastic off of a video game is an exciting moment for me… it represents a fresh start in a brand new experience, allowing me to begin again without carrying over the mistakes I’ve made in my previous adventures. Sure, there are a stack of games over there that represent some of my biggest failures as well as a few of the adventures that I started but never finished, but this new game gives me a chance to start over and bring all of the experience I gained through those stories to avoid the errors of my past. That pile of games that I regret starting or perhaps never finishing are still there, but they represent my past, not my future. This game is more than just the gift of a new adventure… it is the gift of freedom to start all over again.

The Lord’s mercies are new every morning… not just on New Year’s Day, but EVERY day. When we bring our past mistakes to him in repentance, He gives us a fresh start… not just once, but as often as we need it. There will always be choices we wish we could undo, but in His infinite mercy and grace we don’t have to be defined by those mistakes… and as we continue to follow Him we will unlock new skills and capabilities that enable us to go back, finish what we started and do it right this time. Let’s unwrap the free gift of His new mercies and enjoy His fresh start today.

Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness. Lamentations 3:22-23
