With a few exceptions, video games have become much more forgiving over the years… most games feature unlimited lives and the ability to continue as many times as we need to in order to finish the game. But even though we get to continue playing the game after our missteps and failures, we may still lose items we collected as well as valuable progress in between save points. This isn’t because the game is angry at us or punishing us… it’s because there are still ramifications to the mistakes we make, even as the game washes the slate clean and gives us another try.
When we make a sinful choice, it can be easy to confuse the consequences of our actions with “punishment from God”, and as a result we can mistakenly feel that our sins aren’t actually forgiven. Certainly the Lord hates sin because of how it damages relationships and hurts His children, but He does not hold the sins we have repented from against us… they are removed fully and completely. He is not mad at us… Christ’s sacrifice redeems, washes and cleanses all of us completely. And when we face discipline, it is as His beloved children.
Who is a God like You, pardoning iniquity and passing over the transgression of the remnant of His heritage? He does not retain His anger forever, because He delights in mercy. He will again have compassion on us, and will subdue our iniquities. You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea. Micah 7:18-19
If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:8-9
