All good things eventually come to an end… including my favorite video games. After all the skill points have been maxed out, the side missions have been completed, and the final battle has been fought, I usually feel a bit sad and melancholy as I slide the disc back in its’ case for the final time. Sure, I could replay it… but it won’t be the same. This journey, the good and the bad, is over with finality… and even the most thorough game endings still leave me wanting to know what happens next for all of the characters I’ve grown to love.
It’s always hard to grapple with losing a loved one or getting news that reminds us of our own mortality… all the unanswered questions leave us desiring closure that we don’t receive on this side of eternity. But passing on isn’t the end… it’s the beginning. The Lord has built an eternal home for each of us who love Him and have chosen Him, and the life we will share with Him and our loved ones who await us on the other side is beyond our ability to imagine or comprehend. Our adventure isn’t over once we close the book on this race… let’s run well until we joyfully meet again on the other side.
And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away. Revelation 21:4
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing. 2 Timothy 4:7-8
