While I enjoy fighting games such as Super Smash Brothers or Injustice, I rarely take the time to become proficient at them or grow my capabilities beyond the basic moves. Rather than commit myself to learning the advanced combos that would make me a more skilled combatant, I tend to simply mash the handful of attacks I know furiously and hope for the best. A skilled and studious player will easily defeat me because they have mastered their moves, memorized the frames in each attack, and know counters to my less skilled attacks.
Christ has absolutely done all of the work to reconcile us to the Father, and accepting His act of sacrifice has given us the right standing with God. But we are also instructed to GROW in our faith, keeping our feet firmly grounded in Christ so that we are not moved off of our faith by the skilled combo attacks of our enemy. Making active, daily, intentional decisions to develop ourselves in our faith grows our “skill set” to both defend against the increasing complexity of our enemy’s attacks as well as builds our ability to seek out and save other souls who are waiting to be set free.
And you who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled in the body of His flesh through death, to present you holy, and blameless, and above reproach in His sight – if indeed you continue in the faith, grounded and steadfast, and are not moved away from the hope of the gospel which you heard. Colossians 1:21-23a
But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and forever. Amen. 2 Peter 3:18
