Happy Resurrection Day 2026!

One of the central concepts in almost every video game from Pac-Man and Super Mario Brothers to the newest Call of Duty is “resurrection”. Whether we have been captured by an adversary or made a mistake during a platforming jump, an error in judgment typically results in a an opportunity for us to “respawn” and try again… hopefully a little bit wiser this time around. But this “extra life” we have been granted wouldn’t do us any good if we set the controller down after a failed attempt and decided not to take advantage of the opportunity that is being presented to us. “Rebirth” has been offered to us by the game developers, but it is up to us to choose to embrace it and walk freely in this new opportunity that we have been given.

The Lord’s resurrection and triumph over all that has held us bound is the most significant event in history… but celebrating this day without walking in the freedom it purchased for us misses the whole point. Just as Jesus didn’t come back to life just to remain in His tomb, He didn’t pay the ultimate price to set us free so we could remain in trapped in our prisons of guilt, shame, and fear. He didn’t just set us free from sin, He gave each of us the opportunity to be reborn and try again. Let’s walk in the newness of life that Christ gifted us with confidence and joy today… we honor Him the most through the way we move forward.

And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it. Colossians 2:13-15
