In the challenging environment before built-in internet capabilities existed in consoles and broadband internet access was scarce, the development team behind Final Fantasy on the PS2 not only saw the future… they created it. By launching Final Fantasy XI as a purely online title for a console that didn’t have the PlayStation network we enjoy now or even a built-in modem to connect online, the developers had to believe in what they were doing enough to offer a title that required gamers to purchase a modem, a monthly subscription, and a hard drive simply to access the game. While the cost to participate was high, FFXI went on to become a big success and paved the way for future hits like FFXIV… all because the price of following was worth it.
In our pursuit of Christ, we will be tasked with taking up our own cross, carrying each other’s burdens, and offering our bodies as a sacrifice in service to Him each and every day. But before we complain about how high the price is to follow Him, let’s remember that we are simply walking in the footsteps of the Savior who loved us enough to do the same for us. Yes, it will cost us all that we possess to be members of this family, but the return on this investment now and into eternity is beyond any comparison. Jesus is the “pearl of great price”, and He is worth any cost to possess.
The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid; and for joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking beautiful pearls, who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had and bought it. Matthew 13:44-46
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. Romans 12:1
