While there are over a dozen entries and rising in the mainline Final Fantasy franchise, the way players engage in combat comes down to two basic concepts… the slower, turn-based style made popular in the original titles and the faster-paced, active-time battle systems used in the more modern releases. While both systems of play have their merits, the truth is that it is not terribly realistic for adversaries to stand and patiently wait while we juggle inventory, set up attacks, and formulate strategies. Villains don’t tend to take breaks, and they don’t typically give them out in the middle of battle so their opponent can regroup and adjust their tactics, either.

While it would be nice if the daily challenges we face in life would line up, take turns, and politely wait for us to make our selections from a menu of available choices, that isn’t how this battlefield works. We are facing an enemy who knows his time is short on this planet and he isn’t going to make any part of this easy for us… but even though our adversary comes in like a flood to overwhelm us, we serve a God who never sleeps and is actively with us through every trial we face. Let’s surrender all of our anxieties and give Him total control over each part of the battle we are in today. He never lets His child fight alone… and if we listen to Him, He will guide each step we take.

Unless the Lord had been my help, my soul would soon have settled in silence. If I say, “My foot slips,” Your mercy, O Lord, will hold me up. In the multitude of my anxieties within me, Your comforts delight my soul. Psalm 94:17-19

So shall they fear the name of the Lord from the west, and His glory from the rising of the sun; when the enemy comes in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord will lift up a standard against him. Isaiah 59:19
