While each entry in the Final Fantasy series is notable for different reasons, FFIV truly broke its own rules by allowing the protagonist Cecil to “switch classes” during the game. While every lead character tends to undergo growth during the story, Cecil’s switch from a Black Knight to a Paladin flipped the entire narrative right in the middle of the plot. While there were still some who mistrusted him and doubted his “conversion”, Cecil did more than “talk the talk”… he walked the walk and chose a different path from the label he wore at the beginning of the game. Sure, he was originally part of some bad stuff, but he didn’t give his past labels the power to choose his fate.
Sometimes the ugly labels we are given in life are unearned, but for many of our “heroes” in the Bible they are unfortunately accurate… thieves, liars, murderers, adulterers, and more. But in His infinite and incomparable mercy, the Lord gives even the most villainous knight an opportunity for more than a mere redemptive arc… He offers a full rebirth and a new destiny as these individuals became patriarchs, kings, apostles, and more. No matter who we once were or the labels that we’ve previously worn, the Lord chose us for who we’d become in Him. He called us out of the darkness of our past so we could walk confidently in His light, so let’s rip that old label off once and for all.
Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations. Jeremiah 1:5
But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light. 1 Peter 2:9
