While I’m a huge fan of both the Nintendo and PlayStation families of games and consoles for different reasons, I’ve always appreciated one thing about each console that Microsoft has released… backwards compatibility. Being able to pop almost any 360 disc into an Xbox One or even an original Xbox copy of Halo into the Xbox Series X is a demonstration of support for their fans that isn’t free or cheap to provide… but they do it anyways. By using the processing power of their current platform, Xbox reaches backwards and invites every game to the party… even those that some of us might consider to be “less than worthy” of the opportunity to rejoin the family.
The unearned grace the Lord showers us with in our unworthy, unsaved state is truly amazing… but after we’ve enjoyed the benefits of His forgiveness and restoration, many of us forget who we once were and harshly judge others for the very same sins that we were once guilty of ourselves. We shouldn’t look back in shame at our past, but we should never forget that the Lord loved us when we were far from lovable. If His mercy was “backwards compatible” enough to reach down, forgive, and restore a wretched sinner like me, then we should cheerfully extend His mercy and grace to all who are willing to receive it the same way that He once did for us.
And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others. But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved). Ephesians 2:1-5
And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God. 1 Corinthians 6:11
