Xbox, Halo, and the Master Chief: Destined to Carry the Flag

When launching the original Xbox console, Microsoft chose to make a new and completely unknown game the star of the show… Halo: Combat Evolved. On the surface, a mostly silent space marine who never shows his face battling a group of alien forces for control of an ancient relic may not sound like the best mascot for an entirely new hardware platform, but Microsoft saw the massive potential in the Master Chief before anyone else. No, he wasn’t as expressive as Mario or as dynamic as Sonic, but despite the lack of brand awareness or a past track record of success for this character, Xbox chose to make the Master Chief responsible for carrying the flag for their system… and the rest is history.

As followers of Christ, many of us struggle with feeling that we either lack the qualifications to serve Him or have disqualified ourselves due to the mistakes our past. But while our enemy will seek to remind us of our lack of experience and limited capabilities in an effort to strip us of our confidence, the Lord built our potential into us before we were even born… and in His grace He made plans for each of us to carry His flag into our respective missions before we ever had any “qualifications” for doing so. No matter what our history is, He designed us to play a specific part in “His Story”… and we’re just getting started.

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:8-10

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart. Jeremiah 29:11-13
