One of the most unique titles to ever grace an Xbox console is Viva Piñata, a game built around the concept of sacrifice. The point of the game is to grow your garden and compel new piñatas to reside there… but accomplishing that means we must permit the piñatas that already live in our garden to be “broken”, which generates the candy that attracts others to come in. Allowing my little “whirlms” to be sacrificed in order to gain a “sparrowmint” is a high price, but it’s a necessary one… my goal isn’t to have just one happy piñata, but to grow my garden until it is full. None of my piñatas are of higher or lower importance, they just serve different purposes… and it is their willingness to become “broken” that brings the other missing piñata’s home.
As followers of Christ, each of us are the fragile jars of clay He has chosen to inhabit on this planet… and while none of us enjoy the feeling of being “broken”, it is in our “broken” state that His grace is demonstrated and shared with others most effectively. The Lord doesn’t create these painful events in our lives, but He does use them to bring others into the garden, taking these bitter experiences to generate and share the sweet candy of shared brokenness that only a similarly hurt piñata would understand and appreciate in their time of desperate need.
But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us. We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed- always carrying about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body. 2 Corinthians 4:7-10
Who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. 2 Corinthians 1:4
