When it first came out, Gears of War appeared to be just another third-person shooter releasing in an already saturated market… but the familial bond that exists between the “COG” soldiers is the beating heart behind all of the over-the-top violence that makes it stand out from the rest. Despite their unique backgrounds, these soldiers were brothers and friends in every sense of the word, and behind the backdrop of a horrific war for survival lies the story of an unbreakable brotherhood. In a “mad world” where they were treated by their leadership like little more than useful pawns on the battlefield, to each other they were committed friends to the bitter end.
When we are going through our own personal struggles in life, all of the chaos, pain, and loss we are enduring can make us feel insignificant, small, or forgotten by the Lord. But we aren’t simply “cogs” in His machine, marching forward as soldiers for Christ in this war against spiritual darkness… the Almighty God who created the entire universe calls us His FRIENDS. We are a band of brothers and sisters chosen to share in this sacrificial journey with the Lord… one that Christ Himself chose to walk for us first, paving the way with His own blood. We are never alone on this battlefield… He is in the trenches with us. And when He calls our name, He calls us friend.
Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends. You are My friends if you do whatever I command you. No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you. John 15:13-15
And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” And he was called the friend of God. James 2:23
