The “Duel of the Fates”: Anakin’s Pride vs. Obi-Wan’s “High Ground”

As the “Duel of the Fates” between Anakin and Obi-Wan reached its climactic crescendo, the full truth behind Anakin’s fall to the dark side was exposed… it wasn’t just a desire for power that mutated Anakin into the villainous Vader, it was his pride. As Anakin shouted in his rage, “You underestimate my power!”, he engaged in an attack on his friend and mentor that was driven by ego and hubris rather than strategy… and it extracted a heavy cost. Anakin ignored Obi-Wan’s warning that he had the “high ground” and continued to press the attack, and he was easily swatted to the ground by a true Jedi Master as his foolish pride led him into a battle that he couldn’t win… and it took all that remained of Anakin’s humanity as its’ price.

Even in the lives of believers, pride will seek to attach itself to our actions and feed our egos, and if it can succeed in pulling us down a path of trusting in our own gifts and abilities instead of the Lord we will quickly find ourselves in over our heads. The only cure for pride is to do all things in a spirit of humility, recognizing that every one of our gifts and talents were given to us by our Father for His glory and the benefit of others. Pride’s ambition is never satisfied, and it won’t stop until it has fully consumed us… let’s yield to the “higher ground” of unselfish service today.

There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death. Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall. Proverbs 14:12, 16:18

Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Philippians 2:3
