Lando’s friendliness and hospitality towards Han Solo and Leia in “The Empire Strikes Back” hid a dark secret… Lando had made a “deal with the devil” to turn them over to Darth Vader and the Empire in exchange for his continuing freedom and the promised safe release of some of his friends. But Lando was in over his head, and as he came to the painful realization that “this deal is getting worse all the time”, he had a choice to make. Instead of continuing to walk down a path that promised pleasure while demanding an increasing price he couldn’t continue to pay, he chose to make a better deal and was reborn as the heroic General he was always meant to be.

The little compromises that we make with sinful temptations in our lives always contain hidden costs, and as people from the Bible like Samson found out these “deals with the devil” only get worse over time until they eventually take everything away from us. Rather than enjoy the poisonous fruits of sin for a season, let’s slam the door closed on every tempting thought that makes promises that it won’t honor and always ends up costing more than the price tag shows. The best deal we can ever make for ourselves is to give up what we can’t keep in exchange for the priceless gift of salvation from our Heavenly Father that we could never afford.

Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin, esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt; for he looked to the reward. Hebrews 11:25-26
