In our final reflection on Kpop Demon Hunters, the most challenging part of the movie is how we reconcile the truth about who Jinu has been (a clearly flawed human being who made horrible decisions that he deeply regrets) and who he chose to be when it mattered the most. Does it matter if his biggest mistakes happened over four hundred years ago? Does it change the way we view him when we see that he is in bondage to an evil master and is simply seeking freedom through any path available to him? In a “cancel culture” world, is there still room for repentance, restoration and the mercy of God’s grace? Or have we placed our own limitations on which sins are forgivable and who can be redeemed?
While Jinu is just a fictional character in a movie, the questions raised at the end still linger long after the final song… and our view on whether Jinu deserves judgment or mercy tells us a lot about how we view the Lord’s grace. We are surrounded by “Jinu’s” every day… hurting souls who deeply regret their most selfish decisions and would do anything to change them. I know, because I am a “Jinu”. And there is a pretty good chance someone you know is, too. Jesus didn’t come to cancel souls, He came to cancel their debt. Let’s be generous with mercy and grace…the level we show is the level that we will receive.
For we ourselves were also once foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving various lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful and hating one another. But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior, that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. Titus 3:3-7
Therefore be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful. Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you. Luke 6:36-38
There is one Lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy. Who are you to judge another? James 4:12
Judge not, that you be not judged. For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you. And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, “Let me remove the speck from your eye’; and look, a plank is in your own eye?” Matthew 7:1-4
