Rumi and Jinu: On Some Showing Compassion, Making a Difference

The entire narrative weight of the KPop Demon Hunters movie hinged on one important decision that Rumi made midway through the story… the decision to stop looking at Jinu as an enemy to be vanquished and see him through new eyes as a vessel in need of mercy. Once she separated the darkness from the afflicted soul inside, she saw a kindred spirit seeking to be saved from the same evil that she was battling. Even though this vulnerability opened Rumi up to being hurt as Jinu continued to serve Gwi-Ma up until the final act of the movie, ultimately the compassion Rumi showed him allowed him to break free of his chains when it mattered the most. It wasn’t her compelling arguments or her skill in combat that set Jinu’s tortured soul free… it was mercy.

There isn’t a “one-size-fits-all” approach to reaching souls for Christ… just as Jesus always saw past the sin to the sinner and adapted his words to each specific need, we must see every soul through His eyes, letting His Spirit guide us on the best way to share the hope that only exists in Him. Our battle is with the darkness that enslaves souls, not the people who we were sent to save… and even when they act in a manner that hurts us, we are called to show the same undeserved compassion and mercy we once received as we seek to save them from the fire.

Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. And on some have compassion, making a distinction; but others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire, hating even the garment defiled by the flesh. Jude 1:21-23

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Ephesians 6:12
