Between Imposter and the Monster: Hope for the Hopeless

Over the course of the KPop Demon Hunters movie, each of the glimpses we get into Jinu’s broken and shame-ridden psyche builds to a crescendo as he sings the words “Between imposter and this monster I’ve been lost inside my head”… a condition that has tormented him for four hundred years. Having his worst choices and failures replayed in his mind over and over again by Gwi-Ma made him feel unworthy of any hope for salvation. In Jinu’s quest for absolution, his past decisions made him feel like an imposter for daring to believe he could be redeemed… but in his final temptation he showed that no matter how overwhelming the darkness is or how we badly we have failed and fallen before, there’s always an option to choose hope and light.

I have spent many years of my life feeling like an imposter… not just because of my past failures, but because I still contend with daily temptations that remind me that I am still a work in progress. But the difference between the hopeless state I once lived in and the freedom I now possess is that I no longer face these battles alone. We shouldn’t be surprised, lose hope, or feel like imposters if we still hear the enemy of our souls whispering in our ears… the Lord doesn’t just forgive our past, He gives us a way of escape from each new temptation that comes our way.

No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it. 1 Corinthians 10:13

I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. Galatians 5:16-17

O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? I thank God—through Jesus Christ our Lord! Romans 7:24-25a
