The darkest moment in all of Star Wars is the infamous command to “Execute Order 66”, as the previously loyal clone troopers suddenly and violently betrayed their Jedi companions, culminating with that fateful march on the Jedi Temple. What we didn’t know at the time is that the clones had been “programmed” to react in this manner… a “behavioral modification” chip had been placed in their heads that compelled them to perform these previously unthinkable actions. The only solution? That chip overriding their thoughts had to be disabled by surgical intervention… despite their best intentions, they couldn’t simply overpower it by sheer will alone.
Every one of us has an “Order 66” chip in our heads… a “sin nature” we are born with that is capable of overpowering our good intentions and compelling us into shameful actions. No matter how hard we try on our own, we can’t simply “exert enough willpower” to override our inherently selfish programming… we need the surgical precision of the Great Physician to remove these dark impulses and replace them with a renewed mind that is fully submitted to His Spirit. Let’s fully surrender every thought in our minds to the Lord today… Christ came to break every chain that once held us bound, not teach us how to comfortably live with them.
I find then a law, that evil is present with me, the one who wills to do good. For I delight in the law of God according to the inward man. But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? I thank God—through Jesus Christ our Lord! Romans 7:21-25a
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. Romans 12:1-2
