The Tetris Effect: Understanding God’s “Good Gifts”

While I’ve always enjoyed playing Tetris, my least favorite part is waiting for the right block to come my way. Whether I’ve crafted the perfect setup for a “line” to clear multiple rows or simply need a specific shape to appear, sometimes it feels like the game knows exactly what I want and is refusing to give it to me. Block after block would drop down from the top of the screen, each a different shape than I was seeking… but as this pile of unwanted blocks accumulated, I realized something. By deciding what I wanted to receive in advance, I didn’t recognize the gifts I was receiving for what they truly were. Instead, I resented or ignored them simply because they didn’t meet my concept of “good gifts”.

The Lord only gives us good gifts… it’s in His nature. But if we have a specific idea of what a “good gift” is that doesn’t align with the destiny He designed us for, it will feel like His gifts aren’t as “good” as they truly are. Even a good gift is unappreciated when received by a heart that has the wrong expectations, so rather than looking at the gifts others have received and placing our hopes on those, let’s look at the unique bricks He has given us and ask Him to guide us on what He wants us to build with them today. They may be a different shape than we expected, but they will be exactly what we need.

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning. James 1:17

What man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him! Matthew 7:9-11
