While Mario tends to be the star in most of Nintendo’s Mushroom Kingdom adventures, over time each of his companions have found their own personal missions in their respective spin-offs. After playing supporting character roles for years, each of them have received their turn in the spotlight in games like the Luigi’s Mansion series, Captain Toad’s Adventures, and Princess Peach’s Showtime. Their roles may have seemed small and inconsequential at first, but it was these humble beginnings that established them so they could handle the pressure of carrying their own title when it was their time to shine.

As followers of Christ, we will often find that He will guide us through missions of seemingly low importance and minimal impact for His kingdom, but these smaller roles are the testing grounds for larger purposes that will be revealed at the proper time. Just as David trained privately by wrestling with local wildlife to protect his sheep before he took on Goliath and emerged as the defender of Israel and their future king, we will all walk through private challenges as a means of preparing us for our future responsibilities. These small beginnings aren’t always fun, but the Lord uses them to develop our character for our next mission. And when we are faithful in the little things, the Lord will entrust us with more.

Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin. Zechariah 4:10a

He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much; and he who is unjust in what is least is unjust also in much. Luke 16:10
