At the beginning of our journey in the Legend of Zelda, we typically start out with a small amount of “hearts” that represent our health bar. As we play through the battles, endure the challenges, and solve the puzzles that the game throws at us we can discover additional “heart pieces” that increase our vitality… but these valuable items aren’t just lying around on the ground in plain view. They must be intentionally searched out and found by pressing through each trial and unlocking the reward at the end. And as our collection of “heart pieces” increases, we are in a better position to take on the larger boss fights and more challenging obstacles ahead of us… and we’ll need every piece of heart we can find.

The challenges that we endure in life may feel arbitrary or pointless at the time we are going through them, but the hidden value they contain isn’t typically revealed until we’ve fully pressed through them to the other side. In His infinite grace, the Lord uses these dungeon experiences and even our enemy’s attacks to build up our faith to the level that our upcoming battles will require. Each painful trial we face might not appear to have a visible reward right now, but let’s trust in His process… the “heart pieces” we are acquiring by trusting Christ in this testing period holds the key to our future victories.

My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. James 1:2-4

And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope. Romans 5:3-4
