I’ve found that I should be careful what I wish for when playing Mario Kart… because I might get it. For example, when I am falling behind in a race, I desperately want to receive a power-up that will quickly boost me up to the front of the pack… but as soon as I take the lead, I’m immediately targeted by blue shells and other attacks that previously ignored me when I wasn’t in such a prominent position. The blessing of running in first place comes with different challenges than when I was in last place and had nothing to lose. Trying to win the race is a good thing (it’s kind of the whole point of the game), but what I was seeking came with changes that permanently altered my status quo in ways I didn’t anticipate.
In the real world, there are times that I’ve found myself complaining about things that are simply the additional responsibilities that came with an answered prayer… I prayed for a job promotion, but became frustrated by the heavier workload and longer hours that it required. I prayed for a wife and kids, but those blessings came with all new challenges to navigate. Even seeking to be used by the Lord involves sacrifices unique to our calling, so instead of complaining about what changed in our lives as a byproduct of our dreams coming true, let’s remember that we prayed for this… and be thankful He answered.
Do all things without complaining and disputing, that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world. Philippians 2:14-15
And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful. Colossians 3:15
