Mario Kart: The Proper Perspective on “Coins”

While the coins that surround the race track in Mario Kart provide a much-appreciated speed boost, they have a few downsides… they aren’t permanent, they don’t carry over into the next race, and the additional velocity they provide doesn’t make us a more skillful racer, just a faster one. There isn’t anything wrong with collecting them… as a matter of fact, they are definitely beneficial when a driver applies them in combination with driving the right direction with the proper priorities.  But these coins can be lost just as easily as they are gained… their best use is to enhance a racer who is focused on a much higher prize, investing these temporary assets into achieving more lasting rewards.

The grandest treasures that this life offers are still temporary at best, and the good gifts that our Father gives us during our mortal race are designed and intended to be used to grow His eternal kingdom, not hoarded or hidden for our selfish consumption. The “coins” that we’ve been given down here were never truly ours in the first place… He gave them to us to invest on His behalf. Let’s use the “talents” and gifts that we have been given during our time down here to generate treasure that will last… running our race in a way that reaches souls for Christ and results in the most valuable of eternal rewards.

For the kingdom of heaven is like a man traveling to a far country, who called his own servants and delivered his goods to them. And to one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one, to each according to his own ability; and immediately he went on a journey. He who had received five talents came and brought five other talents, saying, “Lord, you delivered to me five talents; look, I have gained five more talents besides them.” His lord said to him, “Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.” Matthew 25:14-15, 20-21
