Of all the enemy attacks in Mario Kart, the blue shell is my LEAST favorite. While green shells are clumsy and easy to dodge and red shells require proximity to an adversary, blue shells come out of nowhere with one thing on their mind… to take out the kart in the lead. These powerful weapons ignore every other racer on the track, targeting only the player who is currently running the best race. While a power-up that exclusively focuses on those who are doing everything right seems to be a bit unfair, we shouldn’t be surprised by it… we should be prepared for it.

Abundant life in Christ is not the absence of persecution, but the presence of His Spirit with us through every trial and tribulation we face. Fellow racers like Joseph and Paul found His grace while unfairly confined in prison, while Ruth and Job experiences His hand of provision after a blue shell attack completely devastated their lives. We are told to take up the armor of God daily because we WILL be attacked… our unjustly murdered Savior promised we’ll face similarly brutal opposition in this life. Let’s expect both the enemy AND the Almighty to show up in our races today… we carry a shield for a reason.

Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. Above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. Ephesians 6:11, 16
