Even the most skilled veteran on the race track will eventually have a “spin-out” moment in Mario Kart… perhaps an adversary landed a blue shell attack and took us out, or we collided with another racer and got knocked off course. Either way, it is disappointing when we were in the middle of a great run only to completely lose all of our momentum (and those race-changing coins) due to an unplanned pit stop. But we don’t have to remain in the pit, no matter how we got there… we just need to turn around, return to the correct path, and get back into the race.
We all make commitments with the best of intentions, resolving to put sinful habits behind us and build healthy routines that grow our relationship with the Lord… but that doesn’t mean we won’t miss the mark on occasion. We have an external enemy bent on destroying us and an internal sin nature at war with us until our final breath, and while Christ absolutely gives us the power to overcome every temptation we’ll ever face, even the best of us can still get it wrong sometimes. We might fall into the pit of despair, but we don’t have to STAY there. Let’s turn this pit into nothing more than a pit stop, return to the Lord in repentance, and continue running our race with confidence. We all fall down, but His grace puts us back on the track.
The godly may trip seven times, but they will get up again. But one disaster is enough to overthrow the wicked. Proverbs 24:16
He also brought me up out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my steps. Psalm 40:2
I will arise and go to my father, and will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you, and I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired servants.” And he arose and came to his father. But when he was still a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him. Luke 15:18-20
