For years, most video games only included one standard difficulty level… if the game was too challenging for us to play at its’ default setting, our options were pretty limited. Sometimes, we might be able to find a cheat code or track down a strategy guide that would help us with tips and tricks to guide us through the tough parts… but we still had to do it ourselves. However… if we were fortunate enough to have a friend with superior gaming skills who had already beaten that part of the game, they could come grab a controller and help us work through all of those challenging spots that had us stumped together.
There is only one Biblical standard for the love that we are commanded to show each other, and it has a very high “difficulty” level… the standard of Christ’s love for us. Jesus lived out the expectation for showing God’s love to others, including those who may make loving them more difficult… a standard that nailed Him to a cross for our sins. While we don’t have an option to decrease the difficulty level of demonstrating His love, the good news is that we don’t have to face these challenges alone or in our own strength… so let’s take a pause before the battle gets tough and allow Him to shine His perfect love through us today. He’s already beat this level, loving the most unlovable when He loved me.
This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends. John 15:12-13
For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 4:15-16
