While it can be a boldly divisive choice at the time, the act of playing from the point of view of the “opposing team” (like switching to the Arbiter in Halo 2) gives us a chance to see the world we are playing in from a completely different perspective. In many cases we find that our antagonist was just ONE mutually beneficial objective away from becoming a critical ally… once we finally stopped fighting and found some common ground. The joint desire of the Master Chief and the Arbiter to prevent the Halo rings from eliminating all sentient life across the galaxy brought these adversaries together to achieve a victory that neither could accomplish alone… turning these one-time foes into the very teammates they both desperately needed.
It is very tempting to respond to the attacks of others the same way they have addressed us, fighting fire with fire until everybody loses. But as followers of Christ we are commanded to respond to others with grace, patiently giving everyone we interact with the same unearned gift the Lord has freely given to each of us. The Apostle Paul would know better than anyone that former adversaries can become brothers in Christ when God’s grace is shown… let’s be the ones who bless our enemies with grace today.
Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside, redeeming the time. Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one. Colossians 4:5-6
