While the most iconic villains from PlayStation’s greatest hits don’t share a lot of similarities, they all have one thing in common… pride. From Dr. Neo Cortex to Sephiroth, each one of these epic antagonists fell victim to their own self-serving ambitions to rule the world. Believing themselves and their goals to be higher than others, they took the gifts they were given that could’ve been used to serve others to carry out their selfish schemes instead. In their arrogance, they failed to recognize the threat that seemingly weaker opponents such as Crash Bandicoot and Cloud Strife represented to their plans… the parasite of pride in their heart was eventually their undoing.
Pride is not just the original sin in Lucifer’s heart, it is also one of his favorite weapons he uses to take down a child of God from within. From King David and Hezekiah to Peter’s denial of Christ, even the best of us battle with the temptation to put our confidence in ourselves and the gifts we’ve been given instead of the Giver of these gifts. The moment we turn our gaze inward with pride instead of upward in gratitude as well as outward to help others we become the villain of our own story. Let’s run with full confidence of who we are in Christ while still remembering we only possess what we’ve been given… in Him we have everything, without Him we are nothing.
Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall. Proverbs 16:18
For if anyone thinks himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself. Galatians 6:3
For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. 1 John 2:16
