Metal Gear Solid: Breaking the “Fourth Wall”

Metal Gear Solid on PS1 is considered iconic for many reasons, and one of them is the way it would “break the fourth wall” during the game… from the Colonel telling us that the correct frequency was on the back of our game case (140.15 in case you still needed it) to the epic Psycho Mantis battle where he not only read what else was on our memory card, but also predicted our movements in battle (until the game prompted us to move our controller into the second controller slot). The game made a deliberate effort to let us know it wasn’t just telling the story of Solid Snake, the character we were observing and playing as… it was speaking directly to us as the player the entire time.

While the Bible was written over the course of thousands of years by dozens of unique authors, it was supernaturally inspired to transcend eras of time and reveal the secrets of the eternal God to us no matter what generation we live in. His words are very much alive and contain all the promises and guidance we need… and when we read them He breaks through the “fourth wall” of time and space to speak directly to us and our specific situations. If we are facing a battle we cannot win or simply scanning frequencies in search of help, His Spirit will speak to us from inside its’ pages… if we will open it up and listen.

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17

For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Hebrews 4:12
