Jean Grey has a bit of a complicated problem… when she is in full control of herself, she is an incredibly powerful and beneficial member of the X-Men, but the “Phoenix Force” that lives inside her and amplifies her powers unlocks a very dangerous and less altruistic side of her, the “Dark Phoenix”. This version of Jean is always present, waiting for her to yield control of herself to its dark impulses resulting in horrifically self-sabotaging decisions. But while she will always battle the “Phoenix” within, Jean still makes the choice on which side of her takes control today.
It isn’t merely difficult to do what is right without the presence of Christ in our daily lives… it is IMPOSSIBLE. In these daily battles we carry our largest opposition to His will for our lives inside of us… we are our own worst enemies. For all who come to Him in repentance of our past sins, we can move forward with confidence that His forgiveness is absolute, but walking in victory over our sinful nature in the present requires us to intentionally bring Him into our day from start to finish and leave no room for our temptations to move in. Even Paul still had to crucify the “Dark Phoenix” within him daily to serve Christ over his own desires, so don’t lose hope if you feel like you are still battling an internal enemy. We all are… and through Him we will win today.
For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find. For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice. O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? I thank God—through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, with the mind I myself serve the law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin. Romans 7:18-19, 24-25
But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts. Romans 13:14
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13
