The MCU version of Natasha Romanoff has a backstory she would like to forget… her past actions as the ruthlessly effective Black Widow resulted in a heavy burden of regret that she couldn’t shake off. While her pursuit of doing anything she could to clear the massive amount of red in her ledger brought us a heroine who eventually made the ultimate sacrifice, she never got to enjoy living free of the guilt and shame that she carried for the sins of her past. She had been forgiven by others and given a place of responsibility and leadership, but poor Natasha never allowed herself to be set free in her own mind… she was a prisoner to her past.
We have all sinned and fallen short of the Lord’s commands, and no amount of “good” that we do can ever undo the “wrongs” we’ve committed in a feeble attempt to balance the scales of justice. Christ came and paid our debts so our ledgers, no matter how much red they contain, could be washed clean… and that forgiveness means we can now walk forward not only in freedom from sin, but from the guilt and regret we carry from who we once were. Let’s make today the last time we walk back into the prison of our forgiven past in shame. Let’s embrace the freedom Christ purchased for us and turn our faces towards what lies ahead… and never look back again.
Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:13-14
But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:7-9
