Sam Wilson may have the most challenging job in the history of the Marvel multiverse… stepping up to fill the shoes and carry the shield of none other than Captain America himself, minus the super-soldier serum that gave Steve Rogers his remarkable physical powers. But both Sam and Steve shared a gift that had nothing to do with genetic manipulation… the heart of a sacrificial hero who was willing to give their lives in service to those who needed them. While it took him a little time to learn how to “wield the shield”, Sam didn’t allow the massive shadow of the larger-than-life hero he was following to deter him from fulfilling his destiny… the world still needed a Captain America, and the shield chose him.
When reading the Bible, it is easy to feel small and inconsequential when comparing ourselves to the “champions of faith” contained within its’ pages… but they were just similarly imperfect humans who were charged with carrying the same shield of faith that has now been handed down to us. The same Spirit of God who led those men and women dwells in us, and while we may possess different gifts, we all carry the same commission to reach our world for Christ… so let’s run our race today in a manner worthy of those who fought and, in many cases, died for the Gospel we now possess. It’s our race to run now.
Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Hebrews 12:1-2
