From the early days of trying to discreetly choose our plays in Madden, through the glory years of GoldenEye, and in every split-screen match of Halo in-between, there has been an honor system between gamers in any same-screen competitive gaming situation… no screen peeking! Looking to see the formation that our opponent was selecting or sneaking a peek at their side of the screen to find their hiding place might be tempting and provide temporary satisfaction, but demonstrating the discipline NOT to look showed respect to our friend and ensured our victory was earned in purity.
It may feel difficult in a world full of increasing temptations, but having a “covenant with our eyes” is a commitment we must each make as followers of Christ… a commitment to the Lord, our real world partners, and ourselves. It is showing the discipline to consciously avoid anything we have no business absorbing, and immediately turning away or scrolling past them when we can’t. As gamers we learned this honor system long ago, and as believers we must be active gatekeepers of what we allow into our eyes, ears and minds to protect our light.
I have made a covenant with my eyes. Job 31:1a
The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness! Matthew 6:22-23
