Gaming adversaries typically have very unique and specific “weak points”… simple ones like Goombas are stopped in their tracks by simply jumping on their head, while others like Piranha plants are immune to these tactics and must be defeated with fireballs or the use of specific environmental solutions like star power. Running around bopping the opposition on the head may work just fine for lower level challenges, but the “Bowsers” we face are rarely defeated by brute strength… they require us to patiently learn and follow the specific methods that the developer of the game designed for us to win these battles.
We may be able to push through some of the real world challenges in our lives through a combination of our own strength, effort, and skills, but the larger battles that we face with addiction, depression, anxiety, or unbreakable sinful habits cannot be defeated through sheer grit, determination, and willpower alone. Trying to overcome spiritual strongholds through our mental and physical capabilities only leads to feelings of hopelessness and frustration. These “boss battles” were designed with only one possible solution… a heart prayerfully submitted to the Lord’s will for our lives each day, one day at a time, allowing His strength and wisdom to achieve a victory we couldn’t attain on our own.
For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ. 2 Corinthians 10:3-5
“Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,” says the Lord of hosts. Zechariah 4:6b
