A “Difficulty Setting” Dilemma

Most games provide us with “difficulty setting” options during the initial game setup, allowing us to determine the level of challenge we want to face during our play through. Whether we prefer a casual experience or a heightened degree of difficulty to truly put our gaming skills to the test, we can choose to turn that dial as high or low as we feel comfortable with. But having this degree of control can also be problematic… the reason beating a game feels so exhilarating is because a great game deftly threads the needle between pushing us to grow our skills while still providing a path to victory. Pressure isn’t a punishment… it’s what makes the experience meaningful.

If I was given the ability to choose my difficulty setting in life, I would probably drop the dial down to zero every time things got tough, giving myself a comfortable path to the finish line with the least amount of resistance. While it sounds good in theory, it would rob me of the growth designed to develop my character as well as my testimony to share with others. These unwanted, difficult, and draining battles serve an important purpose, revealing His power to save through the challenging circumstances we are facing. Let’s choose to shine His light in the midst of our struggles today… the purpose of the pressure is to make us stronger while drawing others to Him.

We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed— always carrying about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body. 2 Corinthians 4:8-10

And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope. Romans 5:3-4
