The Reason We Were Given Armor

Success in a video game is rarely achieved by accident… there are many components that must work together in unison for me to finally reach the “Mission Complete” screen. Sure, the developers have crafted a story with a world that I am designed to conquer successfully, but before I get there I have to put in the work to level up my character, develop specific skills, and find the right combination of equipment and armor for the battles I’m going to face. And once all of those preparations are complete, I still have to actually go out and fight those battles… the creator of the game gave me the power to stand victorious, but I still have to do my part.

As nice as it would be to say, “Jesus, take the wheel” when it comes to facing our battles, it is actually a combination of the Lord’s power and our intentional preparation that leads to victory in our lives. While the Lord clearly helped David in his path to face and defeat Goliath, David still had to supply his own stones and slingshot, walk out onto the battlefield, and take the shot. The Lord is present with us in our struggles and it is through Him that we have the strength to carry our crosses and slay these giants… but only those willing to take the first step ever walk on water. Let’s prepare ourselves to actively serve Him today… He gave us armor for a reason.

Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints. Ephesians 6:13-18
